Truly interactive seating. Personal and adaptive.

Qumulus Seating is a smart seating device that measures the local pressure via sensor technology and automatically redistributes it. The seating surface thus offers tailored and personalized seating comfort.

A little bit about us.

Our origin.

The story of Qumulus (‘cloud-like sitting’) started when Dutch inventor and entrepreneur Hans Voorwinde, a successful developer of a series of patent-based products for the handicapped, together with physiotherapist and ergonomic seating specialist Wim Tinke, developed an application for patients to prevent decubitus or pressure injury. For this technology the inventors were awarded the prestigious Rabobank Herman Wijffels award.

Prolonged sitting.

Prolonged sitting in our society is a major health concern. Scientific research links sitting for long periods of time with a number of health concerns. They include obesity and a cluster of conditions such as increased blood pressure, high blood sugar, excess body fat around the waist and abnormal cholesterol levels, that make up metabolic syndrome.

Smart seating.

The Qumulus is a unique and disruptive innovation for the optimization of personalized sitting experience by continuously processing and interpreting individual seating data via artificial intelligence into unique algorithms. The pressure data are used to adapt and optimize the pressure to the specific part of the body-seat interaction surface via actuators as such stimulating and providing comfort to buttock muscles and skin tissue. In addition, specific seating programs can provide the user with alternating seating experiences.

Characteristics.

Smart seating.

The Qumulus seating system is a platform technology that has the following characteristics:

  • System of pressure sensors and actuators that measures and adapts local seating pressure for a personalized seating experience
  • State of the art ICT system that includes data analysis and AI functionalities, with a user interface Programmed in C (C++, C-Sharp)
  • Recently awarded global PCT patent, WO2019231317 enabling the envisaged licensing strategy
  • System integration options that employ additional user data such BMI, age, gender, body temperature, daily movement (smartphone) and user experience feedback
  • Previous user data and experiences are retrieved from memory, and the system continues to learn from the experience of the body by measuring the pressure and the body response to alternating programs, with the ultimate goal to increase bodily comfort and prevent fatigue

Seating programs for specific requirements.

Smart seating.

The system offers users in various contexts a more conscious sitting experience helping the user to become more body aware, including of the need to move regularly.

The system has the potential to offer individualized optional seating programs for specific user ‘moods’, that can be invoked directly, via voice control systems like Siri, or via smartphone Apps:

  • Energizing — a slightly harder seating experience that energizes the user
  • Relaxation — an interactive soft seating experience, providing relaxation to the user, inducing the user to actively reduce muscle tension on long duration seating
  • Concentration — a seating experience inducing focus on the task at hand, such as a driving or a business call
  • Program options for creative marketing are e.g. “Daydreaming”, “Recovery From Fatigue”, “Activating” etc.
  • Alternating programs and sequences for varying the user experience.
Qumulus Seating is interested to get in contact with strategic partners to license the technology for different markets and sectors.
